Book & Movie Club of the Woodlands (BOOKSWOOD) is a discussion-based reading and film group near Houston that brings together readers and writers interested in literature, cinema, and storytelling craft

Who we are

Book & Movie Club of the Woodlands was founded on June 30, 2024.
The Club explores storytelling at the intersection of literature and cinema. Discussions may focus on:

  • books

  • films

  • books and their screen adaptations

  • multiple film versions based on the same source text

  • artistic interpretations of the same story across different cultural contexts

Selections are not limited by genre, historical period, or canon.
The primary criteria are artistic quality and the potential for thoughtful discussion of narrative, structure, and interpretation.

The Club is a discussion community for readers, writers, and film enthusiasts interested in exploring how stories work across media.

It is a space where literature and cinema meet, and where meaning develops through conversation.

Our discussions often examine:

  • narrative structure

  • adaptation choices

  • character construction

  • differences between literary and cinematic storytelling

  • cultural context and interpretation

Some sessions are especially relevant for writers and focus on craft questions that emerge when stories move between page and screen

Formats

The club operates in two formats:

  • in-person meetings

  • a private online salon for participants joining from different locations

Both formats follow the same principles:

  • attentive reading and viewing

  • thoughtful discussion

  • respect for the complexity of literary and cinematic works

  • respect for each participant’s interpretation

How We Choose What to Read and Watch

We do not limit selections to contemporary works, classics, or award-winning titles. Instead, we choose works that invite meaningful discussion.

The main criterion is artistic strength and interpretive depth. When possible, we select works that allow comparison between a literary text and one or more screen adaptations.

Selections are made collectively and often through lively discussion. The club values open exchange of perspectives and the diversity of reading and viewing experiences participants bring to the conversation.

When and where we meet in person

The club meets on the first Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m.

While many discussion groups meet on weekends or evenings, weekday mornings work well for our participants and allow meetings to begin the month with a shared cultural experience.

Additional meetings are sometimes scheduled when a topic calls for discussion outside the regular calendar or when a smaller group would like to explore a particular text or film.

Meetings take place in cafés in The Woodlands, a green suburban community north of Houston that has repeatedly been ranked among the best places to live in the United States.

Online participation

For participants who cannot attend in person, the club includes a private online salon.

The online format follows the same principles as the in-person meetings:

  • attentive reading and viewing

  • thoughtful discussion

  • respect for interpretive complexity

  • engagement with storytelling across media
