General (in-person) meetings

These meetings are the heart of the club.

Our discussions may include:

  • books

  • films

  • books and their screen adaptations

  • different screen versions of the same story

  • interpretations of the same story in different cultural contexts

The club works much like a traditional book club, but with a wider lens. Alongside reading, we look at how stories continue their lives in other media and how these different versions help us notice meanings we might otherwise miss. We expand the conversation by looking at how the same ideas, characters, or questions appear in other forms of storytelling, including cinema.

Writers’ craft sessions

These sessions are designed especially for writers and participants interested in the art of storytelling.

Here we look more closely at storytelling decisions: how structure works, how characters are shaped, how point of view changes a story, and what happens when a narrative moves from literature to film.

Among other things, we look at:

  • structure and pacing

  • character development

  • point of view

  • adaptation choices

  • differences between writing for the page and storytelling on screen

Writers’ Craft Sessions are small-group discussions focused on storytelling structure, character development, and narrative choices across literature and film. The sessions are open to writers in the Houston and Woodlands area interested in discussing craft in a collaborative setting.

Conversations on sensitive themes

Some meetings are devoted to themes that can feel intense, personal, or difficult to discuss in a larger group setting.
